He had called to ask about a finance charge on his American Express card, but by the end of the call he was sobbing, thankful that he lived in a world where plastic existed, that he didn’t have to hoe turnips from the hard earth outside his yurt every morning, thankful for the Amazon.com package that contained his specialty toe massager, thankful in a way he could not have imagined this morning that such a thing even exists.
